The former Porto player arrived in early February to provide cover for the injured Rodri and has made 17 appearances for City, scoring twice. But despite that, he only played once during the Club World Cup, in a group-stage match against Al-Ain, and has struggled to win over Pep Guardiola.
Gonzalez is now one of several players being linked with a move away from the Etihad following the recent signing of Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. The Netherlands international joined from AC Milan earlier this summer in a deal worth €55 million, or about £46.5 million, adding more competition in the heart of midfield.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Gonzalez’s representatives have already started exploring potential options ahead of a possible transfer in 2025. Although he’s under contract with City until June 2029, his camp is reportedly considering an unexpected switch to Saudi Arabia, where unnamed Pro League clubs have shown interest.
At just 23, an early exit would be a surprising twist and a blow to City’s recruitment strategy, especially given the high hopes surrounding his £50 million signing only six months ago.
