Manchester City is reportedly putting in significant effort to extend goalkeeper Stefan Ortega's contract. When the 31-year-old joined on a free transfer in 2022, it didn't create much buzz, given Ederson's stronghold as the number one goalkeeper at the Etihad Stadium and Ortega's background mainly at Arminia Bielefeld.

However, Ortega has proven to be one of the most cost-effective signings of Pep Guardiola's tenure, maintaining the quality between the posts even when Ederson isn't available. He's made 22 starts and two substitute appearances across all competitions, helping secure seven points in the Premier League against teams like Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, and Liverpool this season.

His latest performance came when Ederson got injured during a match against Liverpool, and Ortega stepped in to ensure City secured a 1-1 draw. With Ederson out for the rest of the month, Ortega is expected to take his place in upcoming fixtures like the FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle and the Premier League clash with Arsenal after the March international break.

Off the field, Sky Deutschland reporter Florian Plettenberg has mentioned on X that negotiations are ongoing for a new contract. However, City hasn't made significant progress with Ortega's representatives yet. Despite having a contract until the end of the 2024-25 season, City is aware of potential interest from other clubs offering Ortega regular first-team opportunities.

Ortega has featured in seven matches this season in other competitions, including three starts in the FA Cup and two in the Champions League. Reflecting on his recent performance against Liverpool, Ortega emphasized the importance of always being prepared to represent City and expressed his satisfaction in making an impact against such a formidable opponent.
