The 2026 Europa League final brings together tournament favourites Aston Villa and surprise package Freiburg in Istanbul on Wednesday night, with both clubs chasing a historic achievement. For Villa, this is a chance to end a 30-year wait for major silverware, while Freiburg are aiming to lift the first major trophy in their 122-year history.

Aston Villa’s rise under Unai Emery has been remarkable. After reaching the Conference League semi-finals in 2024 and the Champions League quarter-finals last season, the Midlands side are now one win away from European glory. Their route to the final has been impressive, losing just once in the competition while brushing aside Lille, Bologna and Nottingham Forest during the knockout rounds.

The semi-final victory over Forest particularly highlighted Villa’s growing maturity on the European stage. After falling behind in the tie, they responded with an emphatic 4-0 victory at Villa Park, inspired by captain John McGinn. That result reignited memories of the club’s famous European triumph over Bayern Munich back in 1982.

Villa also arrive in Istanbul full of confidence domestically. A thrilling 4-1 win over Liverpool last weekend secured Champions League qualification and ensured Emery’s side could focus fully on the final. Since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, no team has won more European matches than Villa, while their defensive record has also been among the best on the continent.

Emery’s experience could prove decisive. The Spaniard is already a four-time Europa League winner and has built a reputation as one of Europe’s great knockout specialists. Another triumph would further cement his legacy at Villa Park.

For Freiburg, merely reaching the final already represents a historic achievement. The German side have steadily grown into one of the Bundesliga’s most respected clubs, building on the strong foundations laid by former long-serving coach Christian Streich.

Under Julian Schuster, Freiburg have combined discipline with attacking flair throughout this European campaign. They swept aside Genk and Celta Vigo before edging Braga in a dramatic semi-final. Their attacking numbers have been outstanding, scoring 25 goals in the competition — second only to Aston Villa.

Momentum is also on Freiburg’s side after a dominant 4-1 win over RB Leipzig secured European qualification for next season. However, this final represents a much bigger opportunity: the chance to write the greatest chapter in the club’s history.

Team News

Villa still have concerns in midfield. Amadou Onana remains doubtful after injury problems, while Boubacar Kamara is ruled out for the rest of the season. If Victor Lindelof fails to recover from a foot issue, Emery may turn to Douglas Luiz or youngster Lamare Bogarde in midfield.

Going forward, Villa look dangerous. Ollie Watkins heads into the final after scoring twice against Liverpool and has already netted five Europa League goals this season. Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers have also been central to Villa’s attacking success in Europe.

Freiburg will be without Yuito Suzuki because of a fractured collarbone, while Patrick Osterhage remains doubtful. However, most of Schuster’s key players are available.

Young midfielder Johan Manzambi has emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout stars, while veteran defender Matthias Ginter has played every minute of Freiburg’s campaign. Experienced playmaker Vincenzo Grifo continues to provide creativity and goals, while striker Igor Matanovic arrives in strong form after scoring regularly in the Bundesliga.

Possible Starting Lineups

Freiburg:
Atubolu; Kubler, Ginter, Lienhart, Treu; Eggestein, Hofler; Beste, Manzambi, Grifo; Matanovic

Aston Villa:
Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Lindelof, Tielemans; McGinn, Rogers, Buendia; Watkins

Prediction
