Arsenal head to the Estádio José Alvalade on Tuesday night for a high-stakes Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP, looking to halt a rare dip in form.

The Gunners come into this encounter under pressure after suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time this season. Manchester City outclassed them in the EFL Cup final, before a disappointing 2-1 loss to Southampton in the FA Cup ended their hopes of a domestic cup double.

Despite those setbacks, Arsenal still have plenty to fight for. They remain firmly in control of the Premier League title race and, more importantly, boast an outstanding record in Europe this season. Mikel Arteta’s side are yet to lose in the Champions League, having cruised through the league phase before eliminating Bayer Leverkusen in the last round.

Their European consistency will be tested, however, against a Sporting side that has turned their home ground into a fortress.

The Portuguese outfit arrive in excellent form, winning their last three matches and scoring freely in the process. Their attacking confidence was evident in a 4-2 league victory over Santa Clara, and they have been even more impressive on the continental stage.

Sporting have won all five of their Champions League home matches this season, including notable victories over Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille. Their most remarkable moment came in the previous round, where they overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Bodø/Glimt with a stunning 5-0 comeback in Lisbon.

That result underlines just how dangerous they can be, especially in front of their own fans, where they are currently on a long winning streak.

A major subplot heading into this tie is the presence of Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish striker, who made his name at Sporting before moving to Arsenal, will face his former club in what promises to be an emotional reunion. Having scored freely in recent weeks, he could prove decisive against the side he once led in attack.

However, Arsenal’s preparations have not been smooth. Injuries continue to disrupt Arteta’s plans, with key players like Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber still unavailable. Although Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhães have been passed fit, the defensive unit may not be at full strength.

Sporting also have their own concerns. Captain Morten Hjulmand is suspended, while several players remain sidelined through injury, potentially weakening their midfield stability.

Even so, the hosts possess plenty of attacking firepower. Luis Suárez has been particularly effective at home in Europe, and with creative support from players like Pedro Gonçalves and Francisco Trincão, Sporting will fancy their chances of breaking down Arsenal’s defence.

Historically, Arsenal have had the upper hand in this fixture and remain unbeaten in their last five meetings with Sporting. They also recorded a dominant 5-1 win in Lisbon the last time the two sides met in 2024.

Still, past results may count for little given Sporting’s current home form and Arsenal’s recent struggles.

Prediction

Sporting 2-2 Arsenal
