Budapest is now just 90 minutes away for either Arsenal or Atletico Madrid, as the two European contenders collide in a decisive UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

The first leg in Madrid ended in a tense 1-1 draw, a result that slightly tilts the balance in Arsenal’s favour heading into the return fixture. While avoiding defeat away from home is typically viewed as a positive outcome in knockout football, there was a clear sense of frustration from Mikel Arteta and his players at full time.

Both sides converted from the penalty spot through Viktor Gyokeres and Julian Alvarez, but the major talking point came when Arsenal were denied a second penalty after a VAR review. The decision, involving Eberechi Eze and David Hancko, left Arteta visibly furious, especially as Diego Simeone animatedly protested on the touchline during the review.

Controversy aside, Arsenal remain unbeaten in this season’s Champions League campaign and now stand on the verge of setting a new club record with a 14-game unbeaten run if they reach the final. Their recent form reinforces that belief, with a convincing 3-0 Premier League win over Fulham keeping them six points clear at the top of the table.

At home, Arsenal’s European pedigree has also been formidable. They have lost just once in their last 15 UEFA home matches against Spanish opposition — a statistic that will further boost confidence in North London.

For Atletico Madrid, the stakes are equally high. Their season risks ending without silverware unless they can pull off a statement result away from home. Having already suffered disappointment in the Copa del Rey and with the La Liga title slipping away, this competition represents their final shot at glory.

Despite heavy squad rotation, Atletico secured a 2-0 win over Valencia at the weekend, showing renewed momentum after a difficult spell earlier in the spring where they lost seven of eight matches. Simeone’s side has also demonstrated resilience in Europe, progressing from six of their last 10 knockout ties after drawing the first leg at home.

Adding an extra layer of intrigue, Atletico previously eliminated Arsenal in the 2017–18 Europa League semi-finals — a memory they will hope to replicate.

Team News

Arsenal received a timely boost with Bukayo Saka fit and available after being substituted as a precaution at the weekend. Key figures Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz are also expected to return, strengthening Arteta’s attacking options. However, Jurrien Timber and Mikel Merino remain sidelined.

In midfield, Martin Zubimendi is likely to return to the starting XI, while defensive adjustments could see Piero Hincapie come in at left-back.

Atletico Madrid have their own fitness concerns, but there was relief after tests confirmed that Julian Alvarez’s injury scare in the first leg was not serious. The Argentine forward, who recently surpassed a scoring milestone previously held by Lionel Messi in the Champions League, is expected to lead the line.

Simeone also has a near-complete squad available, with only Pablo Barrios and Nico Gonzalez ruled out. Experienced figures like Antoine Griezmann and Koke are set to play key roles.

Prediction

Arsenal 1-0 Atletico Madrid
