Liverpool target Marc Guehi is reportedly willing to run down the final year of his Crystal Palace contract in hopes of securing a move on his own terms, even though Palace would prefer to sell him this summer.

The Reds are shaping up to be one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders, having already agreed a deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz that could rise to £116 million. While attacking reinforcements have been the focus, Liverpool are also keeping an eye on their defence, with Guehi emerging as a serious option in recent days.

That interest comes as no surprise, especially with young defender Jarell Quansah potentially heading to Leverkusen in a £30 million deal.

According to The Guardian, Guehi isn’t in a rush. The 24-year-old is reportedly open to staying at Palace for one more season and leaving as a free agent next summer. He has been one of the standout performers under manager Oliver Glasner, playing a key role in their FA Cup win over Manchester City in May.

Guehi’s calmness on the ball and leadership at the back would appeal to new Liverpool boss Arne Slot. However, if he were to join the Premier League champions, he would face serious competition for a starting spot from Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk.

One potential drawback is Guehi’s aerial ability. He won just 59 percent of his aerial duels in the Premier League last season, lower than Konaté at 66 percent and Van Dijk at 69 percent. At 5 feet 11 inches, he is also significantly shorter than both of them. Liverpool have traditionally preferred taller, more dominant defenders like Joel Matip.

Another consideration is whether Guehi, a regular for England, would be content with a role off the bench. That could depend on whether Liverpool view him as a long-term replacement for Konaté.
