Liverpool have capped off a dramatic transfer deadline day by sealing two huge signings that underline their ambitions to remain dominant in English and European football.

The Premier League champions have agreed a British transfer record fee of £125 million to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. Sources suggest the deal could eventually rise to £130m with add-ons. The Swedish forward is undergoing a medical before putting pen to paper on a six-year contract, making him Liverpool’s marquee signing of the summer.

Isak had long been the Reds’ top attacking target. An earlier bid of £110m was turned down in August, but Liverpool returned with an improved offer that finally convinced Newcastle to sell. The Magpies, who recently brought in Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, were prepared for his departure.

Alongside Isak, Liverpool also struck a deal to bring in England centre-back Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for a fee in the region of £35m plus a sell-on clause. The 25-year-old, who captained Palace during their strong start to the season and even lifted the FA Cup last term, is set to complete his medical in London before signing a long-term contract at Anfield.

The double swoop takes Liverpool’s summer spending to an eye-watering £451.2m before add-ons—a Premier League record. Only Chelsea in 2023 had previously broken the £400m barrier in a single transfer window. That outlay includes earlier deals for Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni.

At the same time, the club has offset some of that spending through high-profile departures, with Luis Diaz, Darwin Núñez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyler Morton and Ben Doak all moving on.

For Guehi, the move comes after four years at Selhurst Park, where he made over 160 appearances and broke into the England setup, starring at Euro 2024. His decision not to renew his contract, which was in its final year, pushed Palace into sanctioning his exit after lining up replacements.

With Isak to lead the line and Guehi strengthening a defence that has already looked shaky this season, Liverpool’s squad rebuild is complete. Their staggering investment signals a clear message: Jürgen Klopp’s side intends to stay at the very top, both at home and abroad.

With the deadline say acquisition of Isak I'm confident we're retaining the league title at Anfield. Such a shame Guehi's deal was called off at the 11th hour...
