Jessica Pegula secured the Canadian Open championship on Sunday with an emphatic victory, overpowering Liudmila Samsonova with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

Pegula displayed relentless dominance against her opponent, swiftly securing two holds for both players. Following that, the American claimed the next five consecutive games, restricting the 15th-ranked player in the world to a mere six points on her own serve.

Taking advantage of some double faults from the Russian player, Pegula clinched her second WTA 1000 title in impressive fashion, delivering a bagel to Samsonova. This achievement added to her Guadalajara Open title from 2022.

Notably, this victory marked Pegula's first WTA Tour crown at any level in 2023, following her earlier loss in the opening final of the year to Swiatek at the Qatar Open in February. Furthermore, her win made her the first American in a decade to capture the Canadian Open title since Serena Williams in 2013.

"We're out on tour to win tournaments and to win titles every single week, but tennis can be really tough where you sometimes lose a lot," Pegula said.

"Even when you're winning a lot of matches, you're still not winning tournaments, so it can get tough. Winning a week like this week makes it all worth it and makes you want to keep going for more. I'll be right back at it tomorrow in Cincinnati."
