A place in next season’s Champions League is the prize on offer when Aston Villa and Chelsea lock horns at Villa Park on Wednesday night in a high-stakes Premier League encounter.

Both sides arrive nursing weekend setbacks. Villa were beaten 2-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, while Chelsea suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat away to league leaders Arsenal.

Villa’s loss to Wolves was another blow in what has become an increasingly inconsistent spell. That result handed Rob Edwards’s side just their second league win of the campaign and underlined Villa’s recent fragility. For Unai Emery, the concern is not just the defeat itself, but the broader trend: only one win in their last five Premier League fixtures.

Sitting 13 points adrift of the summit, any lingering title aspirations have realistically evaporated. However, the campaign is far from a write-off. The battle for a top-five finish – which is widely expected to secure Champions League qualification – is tightening, and Villa remain firmly in that mix.

Wednesday’s contest carries added significance given the congested table. Chelsea are one of three clubs within a six-point cluster chasing the same objective. A victory would not only halt Villa’s slide but also inflict direct damage on a key rival.

Confidence from the reverse fixture may also play its part. Villa triumphed at Stamford Bridge in December thanks to an Ollie Watkins brace, and they now have the opportunity to complete a league double over Chelsea for the first time in over three decades.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have experienced a mixed spell under Liam Rosenior. After winning his first four league matches in charge, momentum has stalled. The Blues have drawn at home to Leeds United and Burnley before succumbing to Arsenal at the Emirates, conceding twice from set pieces.

All three of Rosenior’s league defeats have come against Mikel Arteta’s side, and while the Arsenal hurdle will not reappear until May, the fixture list remains unforgiving. Encounters with Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool still await domestically, while Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain loom in Europe.

Currently sixth and six points behind Villa, Chelsea cannot afford another setback. A defeat would widen the gap to a direct competitor and further complicate their qualification hopes.

Team news

Villa’s midfield options remain stretched. Boubacar Kamara is ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, and Youri Tielemans is also expected to miss out again. Harvey Elliott has been absent for over a month, while Andres Garcia’s setback is set to sideline him for several more weeks.

There is cautious optimism surrounding club captain John McGinn, who has been out for six weeks with a knee issue, though his involvement may depend on late fitness checks.

Chelsea regain Wesley Fofana from suspension, strengthening their defensive options. However, Pedro Neto is unavailable after his red card against Arsenal.

Estevao Willian and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens remain sidelined with thigh problems but are nearing returns, and Dario Essugo is also close to full fitness. Marc Cucurella faces a late assessment.

Levi Colwill continues his long-term rehabilitation and is not expected back this season, leaving a notable gap in Chelsea’s defensive depth.

Possible starting lineups

Aston Villa:
Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Luiz, Onana; Buendia, Rogers, Sancho; Abraham

Chelsea:
Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Fofana, Hato; Caicedo, Santos; Palmer, Fernandez, Garnacho; Pedro
