Arsenal have finally made a breakthrough in their pursuit of striker Viktor Gyökeres, reaching a verbal agreement with Sporting CP, according to football.london and first reported by David Ornstein.

After days of negotiations, the two clubs have settled on a deal worth €63.5 million (around £55 million), plus an additional €10 million (£8.7 million) in performance-based add-ons. The agreement brings an end to drawn-out talks that had entered their final phase over the weekend.

While the transfer isn’t yet official, only minor details remain before Gyökeres can complete the move to the Emirates. His agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, is even reported to have waived his commission to help get the deal done. The Swedish international is expected to sign a contract that runs until the summer of 2030.

Arsenal had hoped to finalize the deal before flying to Singapore for their pre-season tour, where they will face AC Milan on July 23, followed by Newcastle United and then rivals Tottenham. While Gyökeres is unlikely to feature in those matches, he may join the squad during the tour once his medical is complete.

If that timeline holds, his Arsenal debut could come on August 6 against Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium, with a possible competitive debut away to Manchester United in their Premier League opener.

The 26-year-old will be Arsenal’s fifth summer signing, following Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard.

Sporting CP had hoped to keep their star striker, but sources close to the deal suggest Gyökeres has been keen on a move to North London for some time.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised the work behind the scenes:

"Andrea [Berta] and the team have done an excellent job pushing things forward. There's still time left in the window, and we're hopeful we can continue strengthening the squad."
