In an unexpected move, former Barcelona manager and club legend Xavi Hernandez applied for the head coach position of the India national football team. His name appeared on the official shortlist, sparking surprise among officials at the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
However, the AIFF’s technical committee decided not to move forward with his candidacy, mainly because of budget limitations associated with hiring a coach of his high profile, according to the Times of India.
Xavi’s application highlights how India’s football scene is attracting global attention. Alongside him, the AIFF considered applications from a wide range of coaches, including former Liverpool stars Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell. Several familiar faces from the Indian Super League also threw their hats in the ring, such as Kibu Vicuna, Eelco Schattorie, and Khalid Jamil.
While Xavi’s bid was ultimately unsuccessful, the fact that such a high-profile coach showed interest reflects growing international interest in Indian football. The AIFF had to evaluate over 170 applicants in total, showing how sought-after the coaching role is on the global stage.
A quick look back at Xavi’s incredible career: he made over 700 appearances for Barcelona, winning eight La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. He was also a key player for Spain’s national team, helping secure two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup.
After retiring as a player, Xavi turned to coaching, leading Al Sadd in Qatar to league success and then bringing Barcelona to the La Liga title in the 2022–23 season before stepping down in 2024.
