Champions League qualification is already secured for Manchester United, but there is still plenty riding on Saturday’s Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light as interim manager Michael Carrick continues his push to land the role permanently.

United head into the contest full of confidence after a dramatic 3-2 victory over rivals Liverpool last weekend, a match sealed by a late winner from Kobbie Mainoo. Since Carrick’s appointment in January, the Red Devils have collected more Premier League points than any other side, transforming a campaign that once looked destined for disappointment.

After finishing 15th under former boss Ruben Amorim last season, United are now on course for a third-place finish and arrive at Sunderland chasing a fourth consecutive league victory. Carrick’s impact has been significant, with several senior players openly backing him to remain in charge beyond the summer.

For Sunderland, European qualification hopes are beginning to fade. Regis Le Bris has still overseen an impressive campaign overall, but the Black Cats have won only once in their last five home matches and are four points behind the top seven with only three games left.

Last weekend’s frustrating 1-1 draw at Wolves also came with controversy, as defender Daniel Ballard was sent off and now begins a three-match suspension. Sunderland’s defensive reshuffle could prove costly against a United attack that has found rhythm in recent weeks.

Historically, this fixture heavily favours Manchester United. Sunderland have managed only three wins in 33 Premier League meetings with the Red Devils, while United have lost just once in 15 league visits to the Stadium of Light.

Team News

Sunderland remain without Ballard through suspension, while Romaine Mundle is still sidelined with a hamstring problem. There is better news regarding Nilson Angulo and Bertrand Traore, both of whom returned to training this week and could make the squad.

Captain Granit Xhaka will once again be central to Sunderland’s midfield alongside Noah Sadiki and possibly Habib Diarra.

Manchester United are still missing Matthijs de Ligt through injury, while striker Benjamin Sesko faces a late fitness test after suffering a shin issue against Liverpool.

However, Lisandro Martinez returns from suspension and is expected to slot straight back into defence. Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, is closing in on the Premier League single-season assist record and remains United’s chief creative threat.

Possible Starting Lineups

Sunderland:
Roefs; Mukiele, O'Nien, Alderete, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Talbi, Diarra, Le Fee; Brobbey

Manchester United:
Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko

Prediction

Sunderland 1-2 Manchester United
