According to reports, Newcastle United has dispatched scouts to observe Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz. Newcastle is currently having a remarkable season, aiming to secure a Champions League spot. They sit fourth on the Premier League table, three points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have played one more game.

With a potential balancing of European and domestic football next season, the club is eager to strengthen its team during the summer transfer window, and Wirtz could be a potential target. Newcastle scouts were present when Wirtz scored the equalizer in Leverkusen's 1-1 draw against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League quarter-final first leg. They were also in attendance for Leverkusen's goalless draw with Wolfsburg, in which Wirtz played the final 29 minutes after coming off the bench.

While Wirtz typically plays in attacking or central midfield, he has the flexibility to play out wide or up front, making him a valuable addition to Newcastle's squad. Leverkusen has been linked with Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid, but they are hesitant to sell the German international. However, a recent report suggested that they may consider a £88m offer.

Despite missing the first half of the season due to injury, Wirtz has scored four goals and provided eight assists in 17 competitive appearances since returning after the World Cup break. He is expected to start in Leverkusen's Europa League quarter-final second leg on Thursday. Meanwhile, Newcastle is preparing for a crucial Premier League home game against Tottenham on Sunday.
