Manchester City return to the UEFA Champions League spotlight on Tuesday night with a daunting mission as they host Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium.

After suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s side must produce something special to keep their European campaign alive.

The damage was done in Madrid, where Federico Valverde delivered a stunning performance, scoring a first-half hat-trick that left City stunned.

Pep Guardiola faced criticism after the match for his tactical decisions, including an experimental lineup that saw several key attacking players left on the bench. The gamble did not pay off, and City struggled to recover once they fell behind.

Now back at home, the expectation is that Guardiola will revert to a stronger, more familiar setup as they attempt to overturn the deficit.
One of the biggest concerns for City heading into this clash is their recent lack of cutting edge in attack.

Erling Haaland, usually a reliable source of goals, has been unusually quiet, while Phil Foden has also struggled to find form.

A recent 1-1 draw against West Ham United highlighted those issues again, with City failing to convert chances despite dominating spells of play.

Against a team as clinical as Madrid, that inefficiency could prove decisive.

In contrast, Real Madrid travel to England in excellent form and full of belief.

Under Álvaro Arbeloa, Los Blancos have been on a strong run, including a convincing 4-1 win over Elche CF in La Liga.

Historically, Madrid thrive at this stage of the competition, having progressed from 13 of their last 15 round-of-16 ties. With a three-goal cushion already secured, they are firmly in control of this tie.

City are relatively stable in terms of squad availability, with Joško Gvardiol and Rico Lewis the only confirmed absentees. The return of Mateo Kovačić is a timely boost.

Real Madrid, however, have several key players missing. Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham are both unavailable, while Rodrygo remains out long-term. Defensive options are also stretched, with multiple players dealing with injuries.

Expected Lineups

Manchester City are likely to rely on Haaland up front, supported by a mix of pace and creativity from the wings, while Rodri anchors the midfield.

Real Madrid, despite their absentees, still boast attacking threats such as Vinícius Júnior, who could be crucial on the counter-attack.

Expert Prediction

Manchester City 2-2 Real Madrid
