Within the realm of central defense, the likes of Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and even Luke Shaw, who primarily plays as a left-back, have been favored over Maguire. Consequently, it is likely that Maguire will find himself on the substitutes' bench for the upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley. Maguire was signed by Man United in 2019 from Leicester City for a staggering fee of £80 million, setting a world-record for a defender. However, it is believed that the Red Devils are open to considering offers for the English international this summer.
Maguire, who still has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, has expressed his desire to play more frequently for Manchester United. Ten Hag has further disclosed that Maguire is dissatisfied with his current situation at the club and that it will ultimately be the player's decision whether he wishes to explore new opportunities elsewhere during the summer transfer window.
In an interview with The Times, Ten Hag stated:
"No-one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well. He trains always on best levels, so with 100% effort.
"So he handles that situation well and he's in that manner and in his captaincy he's important for the squad. He has high competition there (at centre-back) with Raphael Varane, who's fantastic.
"Let's say I'm happy he's here and when we needed him he did his job. But it's also a decision he has to make."
