Chelsea face a daunting task on Tuesday night as they welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

After suffering a heavy 5-2 defeat in Paris, Liam Rosenior’s side must produce something extraordinary to overturn the deficit against the reigning European champions, who arrive in London firmly in control of the tie.

Chelsea showed resilience in the first leg at the Parc des Princes, twice coming from behind to level the score at 2-2. However, their defensive frailties were brutally exposed in the final stages, as PSG ran riot with three late goals to take a commanding lead.

The turning point came in the 62nd minute when Luis Enrique introduced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian winger made an instant impact, setting up Vitinha before scoring twice himself in a devastating cameo that left Chelsea reeling.

Historically, the odds are stacked against the Blues. This marks only the second time they have lost the first leg of a European knockout tie by three or more goals away from home. The previous instance, against Real Zaragoza in the 1994-95 Cup Winners’ Cup, ended in elimination despite a second-leg win.

Chelsea’s recent form offers little encouragement. A 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United over the weekend means they have now lost three of their last five matches in all competitions. That game was also marred by an unusual incident involving referee Paul Tierney, which added to the growing frustration around the club.

Defensively, Rosenior’s men will need significant improvement after their collapse in Paris, especially against a PSG attack brimming with confidence and creativity.

For PSG, the first-leg performance underlined why they remain one of Europe’s most feared sides. The French champions not only took control of the tie but also exacted revenge for their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in last summer’s Club World Cup final.

With no domestic fixture over the weekend, Luis Enrique’s squad come into this match well-rested and fully focused. They will be aiming for a fifth win in six away matches across all competitions.

PSG also boast a solid record at Stamford Bridge, having lost just once in their previous four visits. Their last trip saw them secure a 2-1 victory in the 2015-16 Champions League, thanks to goals from Adrien Rabiot and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Team News

Chelsea have received a small boost with Pedro Neto avoiding suspension following his altercation with a ball boy in the first leg. Estevao Willian could also return from a hamstring injury.

However, defensive concerns persist. Reece James remains sidelined, while Malo Gusto is a doubt due to illness, potentially forcing youngster Josh Acheampong into the starting lineup.

PSG, on the other hand, have minimal injury worries. Fabian Ruiz and Quentin Ndjantou are expected to miss out, but otherwise, Enrique has a full-strength squad to choose from.

Vitinha will be one to watch, having scored in three consecutive Champions League matches against English opposition. Meanwhile, PSG’s attacking options are in formidable form, with Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola, and Ousmane Dembele all contributing in the first leg.

Possible Lineups

Chelsea:
Sanchez; Acheampong, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo; Estevao, Palmer, Neto; Pedro

Paris Saint-Germain:
Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Neves; Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Barcola

Expert Prediction

Chelsea 1-2 PSG
